Let's Talk

Harry’s Story

At the age of 12 I lost my father to suicide. Going through university and early employment, I hid my true life from everyone. This meant that I never had to tell anyone, even those closest to me, the truth. This destructive cycle continued for over a decade.

It wasn’t until I was intercepted by a suicide prevention charity campaign from Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), whilst at the same time as joining a new employer, that I began to share my story. It was then that I realised the impact this could have. This kick-started a chain of events that led to me becoming fixated on the impact that the workplace can have in supporting mental health and wellbeing.

I knew the world of workplace wellbeing needed to evolve, and that requires thinking differently. This desire remains at the heart of Elevo, our team and our clients. While there is still a long journey ahead, I couldn’t be prouder of the difference we are making.

Suicide bereavement never truly fades, it becomes part of you.

My experience of losing my father continues to shape the way I feel and behave. I believe that suicide is preventable, and that we all have the ability to help prevent suicide in our worlds. This is what drives my purpose – to create a future where support is accessible to everyone and the warning signs are more likely to be intercepted. With so much of our lives spent at work, I believe workplaces have a crucial role in promoting wellbeing and equipping people with the awareness, skills and tools they need to prioritise their mental health, whatever stage of life they’re at.

Introducing Brain First Workplace

While losing my father profoundly shaped my journey, so has an unrelenting drive and purpose behind my work. For as long as I can remember, I’ve known that my mind works differently to many others. It wasn’t until my late 20s, when I was diagnosed with ADHD, that I gained the clarity I had been searching for.

This diagnosis was life changing. It helped me understand myself for the first time. Knowing how my brain operates allowed me to create a lifestyle and work approach that works for me, and benefits those around me too.

It also opened my eyes. I realised how different life and work could have been if I had known this sooner, and if those around me had been equipped to understand how to get the best from me.

That realisation inspired me to take action. Together with Amanda Perry, an expert neurodiversity coach, we co-founded Brain First Workplace to bring neurodiversity awareness and education into the workplace. Our mission is simple, to empower people to better understand their minds and to help organisations embrace neurodiversity as a strength, not a challenge.
